Former Kerry boss and Football Rules Committee member Eamonn Fitzmaurice has responded to inter-county managers who have been critical of the constant rule changes.

The FRC introduced a lot of new rules at the beginning of the season and last weekend several more tweaks were added and implemented to the game.

Some managers have been critical, not just of the rules, but the volume of them, and the constant tweaking, as they find it difficult to plan and prepare their teams.

Donegal's Jim McGuinness says that the adjustments put a lot of load on the players, and that rewarding two points for free kicks outside of the arc should not be a part of the game.

Armagh's Kieran McGeeney said that the subjectiveness of the rules are particularly frustrating, but last week conceded that he won't be talking about the changes anymore because he is being called a 'whinger' by 'whingers.'

Meath manager Robbie Brennan was very dismissive of the new game, saying that it was more like basketball than Gaelic football, despite the fact that his team had been performing well.

Speaking on the the RTÉ GAA podcast Fitzmaurice has responded to the critics, and insists that the time for acceptance has arrived.

"I totally get it from the managers' point of view. I've been that soldier -  You're looking at the players at your disposal and you're trying to figure out what's the best way for us to play to maximise what we have and be as competitive as we can.

"The tweaks last week, for some teams, it meant they had to adjust. And work that they'd been working on for the last couple of months was probably no longer available for them.

"I get the annoyance and I get the frustration and everything else. But there comes a point - which is now - that it's just a case of get on with it for the rest of the year and see how the rules can work for you."

From a media point of view, the Kerry legend hopes that constant questioning around the new rules will soon stop, and we can look at the game as a whole rather than just what has changed in the rulebook.

"I imagine after every match, it's probably the easiest question to throw at them from a reporter's point of view - 'well, what did you think of the rules today?'

"I think it's going to get a bit (annoying) - andwe have a small bit of it with Kieran McGeeneyafter the match - where they're going to say, 'look lads, stop asking me about the rules, the rules are there now, it's about getting on with it.'

"It is such a topical subject, I get it. But at the same time, it is probably time for us all to look at the analysis of the game and the trends that are going on, rather than just the rules themselves.

"While it's still in the remit of the FRC and all the groups above them to recommend further changes, I'd be very surprised if that was to happen. Unless something completely untoward happened.

"It's a case now of let teams at it and let's see at the end of the season then."

Most people are probably getting a little tired of the constant talk around rules, what works and what doesn't, so hopefully as we head into the championship, the focus will be more on teams' performances.

The whole point behind the changes was to make the game a more entertaining spectacle to watch, and with the weather changing, the grass getting shorter, and the evenings getting longer, then we could be in for a great summer of Gaelic football.
