Last year broke records for the All-Ireland final song. People in Clare and Mayo who didn't release pre-All-Ireland recordings are very probably a minority.
This year is rather different. Neither Kilkenny or Tipperary are overcome with the musical impulse when they reach an All-Ireland final. Kerry, meanwhile, according to our resident Kerry expert, have only released one All-Ireland song in the modern era. 'We want the Sam Maguire' was released back in 2000, the lyrics of which extolled Donal Daly's workrate.
Mayo artist King Cong (haven't heard much of his stuff) is claiming to have produced 5000 CD's for this year's All-Ireland final.
Sadly, the title of the song 'This Year It's Mayo', is a woefully inappropriate one for a game involving Donegal and Kerry. Therefore, he's looking to get shot of them.
He has claimed:
I spent 2000 euros on 5000 cds before the drawn semi final. I was sure that MAYO would win. I was in a bad way after the match in Limerick last week.
Here are some of the lyrics:
two thousand and fourteenat last the Mayo dreamis going to come trueand our desirewill see the cup come Westas Mayo give their Bestwelcome home to good old Sam Maguire
