What can we do about the Football Championship? That question is getting very repetitive at this stage. It seems a game can't go by without a death knell being heard somewhere in the country. This weekend it was the turn of the Dubs to turn the Championship into a farce.
They were just too good for Longford and it wasn't fair. It seems this has come as a surprise for some reason. Everyone knew Dublin would hammer Longford, sure weren't they in Croke Park (we jest). But in all seriousness, Leinster football has become stagnant over the past couple of years. That Meath vs Louth final in 2010 is the only time in the past ten years that Dublin haven't won the Leinster title.
So is this a cause for concern and should something be done? According to Leinster Council chairman, John Horan, the answer seems to be maybe.
Speaking to the Independent, Horan confirmed that plans were underway to introduce a motion which could see Dublin being put straight into the Leinster semi-final.
We gave Kilkenny a bye to a Leinster semi-final. Do we give Dublin a bye into a football semi-final? That's something we have to look at.
As Horan said, it is a tactic that has been taken to halt Kilkenny's dominance in Leinster and while it does seem to be a bit counterintuitive, the Leinster hurling title has become more competitive in the past few years. Could it work for the football, it seems we may get a chance to find out.
