In the build up to the marriage referendum, Ger Brennan found himself in the eye of the storm when he became one of the most high profile advocates of a 'no' vote. As we all know, that opinion was resoundingly defeated when it came to the ballot box and it seemed likely Brennan would simply return to football without too much fuss.
It seems that won't be the case. Brennan will be back on the Dublin panel when he recovers from injury but he'll be doing so marked with a status not many have been proud to show over the past couple of years. He's now a member of Fianna Fáil and he may even be in the running for a Dáil seat.
The Irish Times are reporting that Brennan has recently become a member of the party and that he is in the running to become a candidate in the Dublin Central constituency. While there is no certainty that Brennan would gain the Fianna Fáil nomination, it seems he has the support of a large section of Bertie Ahern's backers. There's a ringing endorsement if ever there was one.
The St Vincents man would have known that his public support for the 'No' campaign would have been divisive but the the extent of the backlash, and the publicity he received, may have been something of a surprise.
Or perhaps not, because it seems Brennan is certainly not one to go along with popular opinion. 'Male, stale and outside the pale', that was the summary of the party from Fianna Fáil TD Timmy Dooley after the departure of Senator Averil Power last month.
Two out of three isn't bad for Brennan. As you may have guessed, initial reaction has not been overly positive.
Ger Brennan's candidacy for Fianna Fail in Dublin Central will certainly do nothing to prove Averil Power wrong in what she said about FF.

Ger Brennan has joined FF in a bid to run for the Dáil. Holy mother of god. He'll help compound their social conservatism I suppose.
