The Munster hurling final was delayed on Sunday afternoon as a result of a power outage in Thurles.

The hotly-anticipated decider brought Limerick and Clare together for the third year in a row, with the Banner hoping to claim their first provincial title in 26 years.

A sell-out crowd descended on Semple Stadium for the match, but they were made to wait when throw-in was delayed by 30 minutes, just moments before the originally scheduled throw-in time.

Dermot Lynch of the Munster Council explained the reasoning for the delay to RTÉ's Damian Lawlor pitchside in Thurles, saying:

Unfortunately a serious power outage in the area of Thurles has affected the stadium as well. We made the decision, in the interest of health and safety, to put the game back 30 minutes to make sure everyone gets into the ground safely.

With the help of God, ESB are in touch to make sure we get things back up and running soon.

It was an unfortunate start to the afternoon in Thurles, with fans left waiting for throw-in and players' preparations stunted ahead of the biggest game of their season thus far.

Speaking on RTÉ during the delay, Cork legend Dónal Óg Cusack said he was disappointed such an issue could arise in this day and age.

Dónal Óg Cusack questions nature of Munster final delay

Dónal Óg said on RTÉ that he felt a game of this stature in the modern era should not have been delayed for such an issue as a power cut.

The ex-Cork goalie said that he felt a ground such as Semple Stadium should be equipped with back-up power supplies to ensure that the essentials could be kept going in the event of a power cut.

You would prefer to understand a situation before you comment on what's really going on in the stadium and the environment around.

You would like to think, though, that there would be essential services. We were hearing that the players were leaving the dressing rooms because there were no lights inside the dressing rooms.

You would like to think that, in this day and age, in a modern stadium - or what should be a modern stadium - that essential services like lights and safety systems and so on would be able to keep going.

But, again, you need to hear what the actual story is here.

It was certainly a disappointing way for the biggest provincial hurling game of the year to start, and will have done nothing to calm the nerves of the Limerick or Clare players.

We await further details on the exact details of the issues inside the stadium at the Munster final, as a result of the Thurles-wide power outage.

Thankfully, the issues have now been resolved and throw-in is resolutely set for 4:30pm
