Both Donal Óg Cusack and Anthony Daly felt that Clare and David McInerney were unlucky to avoid a black card penalty in Sunday's All-Ireland final.

It was one of the key moments in the final when Robbie O'Flynn looked to break onto a long Patrick Collins delivery that made its way through the Clare defence.

David McInerney lunged for O'Flynn as he ran for the ball and O'Flynn fell to the ground.

Some felt that it should have been a black card for McInerney and a penalty for Cork under the new rule regarding goalscoring opportunities.

But having consulted with his umpires, Murphy gave Cork a free and opted not to book McInerney, who was already on a yellow card.

Speaking on The Sunday Game live, Donal Óg Cusack and Anthony Daly both agreed that the Tulla club-man was 'really lucky.'

"David McInerney is really lucky there," said Óg Cusack.

"There's very few things on a hurling field that happen by accident.

McInerney knows that Robbie is after getting a yard, and Clare and McInerney can count themselves really lucky there."

Speaking on The Sunday Game, Jackie Tyrrell and Shane Dowling agreed that it was an extremely difficult call. Tyrrell pointed out that both Eibhear Quilligan and Adam Hogan were covering which may have influenced Murphy's decision.

"There was so much going on in it," says Tyrrell.

"I felt he just about got away with it Davy Mc," added the Kilkenny man.

"It could have been a black card but he rotated his body around so it's hard to see if he caught O'Flynn. O'Flynn probably went down a bit easy too."

"We've looked at that, I don't know how many times, and we're still inconclusive," added Shane Dowling.

Tyrrell felt that, on the whole, Limerick referee Murphy had a 'good game."

"Johnny Murphy had a good game today," he said.

"He let the game flow. I thought he got all the big calls right. Even that one, it was a big call, he took his time, into his umpires, and made a judgement call then."

But writing in the Irish Examiner, former All-Ireland final referee Brian Gavin said McInerney should at least have got a yellow card.

"At worst, Murphy should have booked McInerney and sent him off. It may have seemed like another Clare defender was providing cover and therefore a goal wasn’t on but McInerney’s foul was cynical."
