A search was conducted at the time but was unable to recover his body. The search resumed in recent days and resulted in divers discovering the 26-year-old's body.

A statement from the Breaffy GAA Club released via Twitter reads:

It is great relief and a lot of sadness that David Gavin's remains have been recovered from Kinbasket Lake. Water levels had reduced greatly in recent weeks to allow a search to be resumed.

David’s family wish to thank everyone for their continued support.

David, a defender, played football for the Breaffy GAA Club. He also played corner-back for the Mayo minor team which reached the 2009 All-Ireland final and represented his county at under-21 level.
