Waterford manager Derek McGrath has dismissed the fanciful idea of calling Dan Shanahan back into his squad despite the 40-year-old’s promising form for his club team Lismore.
Shanahan has been hailed for his club form, playing both codes whilst also undertaking a role as selector for the county panel.
Speaking to Michael Moynihan of The Irish Examiner, McGrath laughed off the question of Shanahan and his former teammate John Mullane returning to the field, while admitting that they may be the best forwards in the county.
“Dan’s been playing very well, I knew when the balls were in the air that he’d get goals, but when he was playing junior football last weekend I said he was in trouble, because you can’t play the hurley in junior football," he said.
“He finished his goals brilliantly, and rolled back the years, so did John. Maybe at times when Dan is tantalisingly close to going on the field the temptation is there to put on the helmet, but he’ll be staying in his role as a selector.”
McGrath also revealed that he pleaded with Tom Devine to go back on his decision to travel for the year.
The Dungarvan midfielder left the panel this year saying that he felt it was his last chance to travel for a Summer before work commitments come into place after he graduates.
