Galway GAA confirmed on Thursday evening that Micheál Donoghue and his coaching team would be put forward for the senior hurling team at next Monday's County Committee meeting.
Donoghue recently exited his short-lived stint as Dublin manager, having brought the Dubs to this year's Leinster final.
His home county of Galway recently parted ways with Henry Shefflin three years after the Kilkenny legend's appointment. Shefflin's final season in charge proved disastrous for Galway, with the Tribesmen failing to progress from the Leinster round-robin phase.
It comes as no surprise that Donoghue is set to return as Shefflin's replacement, with the move heavily rumoured as soon as the 49-year-old's Dublin departure was confirmed.
There is plenty of work to be done if Galway are to return to All-Ireland finals again. County legend Cyril Farrell, however, has given his take on the key area Donoghue must target in his quest to return the county to glory.

Cyril Farrell urges Micheál Donoghue to put new life into Galway club hurling
Legendary ex-Galway hurling manager Cyril Farrell spoke to Galway Bay FM this week before the appointment of Micheál Donoghue was officially confirmed by the county board.
Despite the lack of an official announcement, it was widely expected he would soon be returning home, and Farrell gave his thoughts on what would make Donoghue's second spell in charge a success.
Farrell spoke bluntly on what he sees as a drop in interest in Galway club hurling, and encouraged the incoming manager to invest time into the county scene. Farrell went on to say that the resources are there for Galway to match the level of Limerick and Clare, should they play their cards right.
We've been at all the matches more or less last year. We've seen it. The support has fallen off, we can't hide it. There's no point saying it hasn't. It has and we need to kickstart and put new life into the team.
We have to back them completely and get back on track again. No more than the club championships now, be hurling for the summer. Would you say to me that we are not good enough to qualify out of Leinster, with three to qualify out of five? We need to get back.
I'd love, whoever it is, if they are in tomorrow let them bang away at whatever they are going to do and back them completely. I am telling you, we have been at a lot of the matches, there is plenty of talent in Galway.
It's only a matter of organising them, getting them focused and getting them playing hurling the way they can. If you went to Limerick club matches or Clare, who are All-Ireland champions, you'd be saying to yourself, 'There is no gap in the clubs.' I can tell you that.
With the pool of players we have in Galway - even going down to the junior clubs - there's a player in every team.
It could be a tough road back for Galway but, if you were to turn to anyone, the manager who ended a near-30-year wait for an All-Ireland title in the county is not a bad shout.
The 2025 season will be fascinating for the Tribesmen under the returning Micheál Donoghue.
