A Motion To Make County Stars Play More Club Games Will Be Brought To Special Congress

The Dublin convention has passed a motion that will go to Special Congress next year, that will mean that county players have to play more games for the club.

County legend Noel McCaffrey, who won an All-Star for Dublin in 1988, and is father to All-Ireland winners Jack and Sarah, believes that inter-county stars don't get the opportunity to represent their clubs enough.

The former centre back wants a motion to come in that will see county players play a minimum of four league matches for their respective clubs, and then their championship games as well.

Speaking on RTÉ's Saturday Sport last month, McCaffrey explained why he thinks that this law should be implemented.

"The reality is now that inter-county players hardly ever play with their clubs except in the now-shortened club aspect of the split season, which is now down to four months.

"In Dublin, and probably many other counties, the vast majority of clubs don't have county players.

"A Dublin club will play on average four championship games. We can’t surely accept that inter-county players are playing four games with their club. I would argue it is a complete betrayal of what the GAA should be about.

"What is so, so special about the GAA, should be, is that David Clifford plays with Kerry one week, and next week he’s with playing his friends, in front of his family and neighbours, and the following week he is back in with Kerry.

"That is an extraordinarily unique aspect of the GAA. We are not celebrating that, we are stamping it out.

"We have values that are rooted in the community. We have values that supposedly mean our heroes are in the local park on a regular basis, not just four times a year."

McCaffrey has proposed that the GAA calendar should be split into four separate blocks, however, this could potentially be at odds with the Gaelic Players Association who back the current split season format.

The GPA confirmed last summer that 85% of its members backed the split season approach, but McCaffrey's motion will be brought to Special Congress next year, and a decision will be made from there.
