Jack Cahalane has decided to withdraw from the Cork senior footballers this season, making him the seventh player to do so.

Between retirements and players deciding to opt out for a year, John Clearly is looking at a much thinner panel than he had last season.

Thomas Clancy, Killian O'Hanlon and John O'Rourke have all retired, while Steven Sherlock, Damien Gore and Kevin Flahive have all opted out for the coming season like Cahalane.

The Cork footballers had a mixed bag this season, after a disappointing start to the league, they managed to keep their Division Two status rather comfortably, but never really looked like threatening for promotion.

In Munster they were well beaten by Kerry once again, in a championship that is starting to look more and more like Groundhog Day, but they did enjoy more success in the group stages.

Following a big win over Tyrone in the first round, and an Ulster title locked up in the trophy cabinet, Donegal came to town to play Cork, and many thought they would win comfortably.

However, The Rebels pulled off an unlikely victory and looked very good doing it, and suddenly things were looking very bright for the Munster side.

Despite having a good performance, Tyrone managed to defeat them, but their win over Clare meant that they marched to the preliminary quarter finals.

Louth were waiting for them in that round, and managed to beat them by a single point to book their spot in their first ever All-Ireland quarter final against Donegal.

So despite some good days out, and some decent performances, Cork actually finished the season worse off than the year before where they did manage to reach the quarter final stages.

It appears that some of the players were unhappy with their game time as well, and Clearly has a big job on his hands as he will try and rebuild the county team following all of these exits.
