Louth's impressive 2024 season ended after a creditable defeat to Donegal in the All-Ireland quarter final.

Ger Brennan's side were one of the stories of the championship finishing ahead of Monaghan and Meath in the group stages of the All-Ireland championship before beating Cork in the preliminary quarter finals.

They put up a brave showing against Donegal too but were ultimately undone by a second half goal from Eoghan Bán Gallagher.

Louth were none-the-less gallant in a 1-23 to 0-18 defeat with Sam Mulroy, Tommy Durnin and Craig Lennon in particular backing up their brilliant seasons.

Speaking on The Sunday Game, Sean Cavanagh and Cora Staunton both praised Louth over their impressive campaign.

"I thought they were immense today," said Staunton.

Craig Lennon had an immense championship for Louth, scoring 4-7 from play. Sportsfile.

"For long periods of the game they kept up with Donegal. The Gallagher goal was a step too far, but they were immense, particularly Tommy Durnin in midfield.

"But if you look at what they've achieved in the last two years, back-to-back Leinster finalists and through to the quarters this year.

"They have some very good players. Some of their scores today and their work-rate right throughout, they never gave up. They have become one of the top teams in the country," she said.

Sean Cavanagh and Staunton both name-checked top scorer Sam Mulroy and Craig Lennon as potential All-Stars. Mulroy ended his year with 3-43 to his name in the championship while the flying Lennon hit 4-7 from play from wing back.

"They were the last Leinster team standing in the championship. Who would have thought that?" said Cavanagh.

"I fully expect Sam Mulroy to get an All-Star and that All-Star should reflect the performances of Durnin, of McKenny, of Lennon.

"I think Craig Lennon has been immense for them," interjected Staunton. "He won't be far off an All-Star as well," said the Mayo woman.

"How they managed to turn a bad situation in terms of losing their management at the back end of last year, and with Ger Brennan turning that around, that's probably one of the stories of the year," said Cavanagh. 18 points will win most games of football and to put up eighteen points in Croke Park, they deserve massive credit."

Paddy Keenan is Louth's only ever All-Star winner (2010) as things stand but this duo will go close to joining him in the history books.
