Wexford GAA have controversially over-turned the result of the county intermediate hurling championship quarter final between Half Way House Bunclody and Fethard St Mogue's.

Half Way House Bunclody won the game 3-2 after a penalty shoot-out but it has since been awarded to Fethard, as it turns out they scored an extra point in extra-time.

Referee David Jenkins missed one of Fethard's points in the additional period so instead of the game ending in a one point win in their favour, it was deemed a 3-21 to 1-27 draw, leading to the penalty shoot-out.

The quarter final took place last Saturday week and the result was over-turned on Sunday night, eight days after the original result.

HWH Bunclody were initially due to play against St James' in the last four clash this Saturday, but as things stand, St Mogue's are set to take their place.

Bunclody, however, are appealing the ruling to the Leinster council, leaving the championship up in ther air.

It's a battle of the county's kingpins in the other semi-final, with Buffers' Alley taking on Rathnure for a place in the final.

Wexford GAA issued the following statement on Monday morning over the HWH Bunclody-Fethard clash.

Wexford star Aidan Nolan scored 1-18 for HWH Bunclody in the game. Sportsfile.

"(Wexford CCC) have held a hearing into the outcome of the meeting of Fiodh Ard Mhaodhóig Naofa v Tig Leath Slí Bun Clóidí in the quarter-final of The Courtyard Ferns Intermediate Hurling Championship.

"Having considered all the evidence submitted by both parties, the Committee has made the following decision in accordance with Code 15.1 in relation to the objection lodged:

The game is awarded to Fiodh Ard Mhaodhóig Naofa.

Reasons for this decision are summarised as follows:

  1. The Committee deemed the video evidence admissible and unedited. Code 16.1(aa)(1)(iii)(b) applies.
  2. Having reviewed the video, the Committee found the score for the extra time period was Fiodh Ard Mhaodhóig Naofa 0-7 to Tig Leath Slí Bun Clóidí 1-3.  Furthermore, during the course of extra time, there was no evidence of any score being cancelled or disallowed by the referee and/or his officials.
  3. The Committee accordingly deemed the final score after extra time to be Fiodh Ard Mhaodhóig Naofa 1-28, Tig Leath Slí Bun Clóidí 3-21.
  4. In the context of the findings above, it was the unanimous decision of the Committee that the game be awarded to Fiodh Ard Mhaodhóig Naofa.

This decision was taken pursuant to Riall 7.4(n)(ii) An Treoraí Oifigúil Part 1, 2024.

Notice of the decision was relayed to both clubs at 9.02 p.m. on Sunday October 13, 2024. Any appeal must be lodged with Leinster Council within three days (72 hours) of this time.

Fixture details for the subsequent semi-final of The Courtyard Intermediate Hurling Championship will be confirmed following the outcome of any potential appeal."
