Conor McManus has suffered an injury setback that looks set to rule him out of the remainder of this year's Monaghan club championship, with rumours continuing to circle surrounding the player's future at inter-county level.

It has been widely suggested that the legendary forward was considering stepping away from Monaghan duties in 2025, having spent 17 years as part of their senior setup. The 36-year old has been non-committal on the issue, suggesting back in June that he would take some time to consider his next move.

McManus has now suffered an injury at club level, one that looks set to cut short his 2024 campaign.

The Monaghan Senior Football Championship got underway in recent weeks, with Conor McManus' Clontibret O'Neills having won the opening two games of their campaign.

However, their prospect in this year's competition have been damaged by the news of a hand injury suffered by their star forward.

Speaking on Northern Sound, Clontibret manager Paul McCartan confirmed that McManus was likely to miss the rest of the club's championship campaign.

We’ve lost 'Mansy' with a serious injury, the panel is well stretched at the minute. It’s a wee bit more serious (than we thought).

He’s probably going to be pretty long term at this minute in time. It’s probably looking like the season is over for Conor.

McManus sported a bandage on his hand in recent weeks, but as McCartan explains, the injury now appears to be more severe than first feared. Clontibret's last county title triumph came back in 2019.

With his 2024 season now likely to be over, the Clontibret man could well turn his attentions towards making a decision on his future with Monaghan. Considering he will turn 37-years old in November, he might well feel that now is the best time to step aside.
