The inter-county season is done and dusted but the club championships are just starting to heat up all across the country.

Although some counties are yet to start their campaigns, others have already got the ball rolling, and it didn't take long for a few surprises to occur.

We took a scan through some of the biggest games last weekend and took note of five key talking points.

5. Paul Mannion steals show in Dublin championship

Club championships

Reigning champions Kilmacud Crokes got off to a winning start against Skerries Harps, but it wasn't the performance that they would have hoped for.

A large part of that was down to how impressive Skerries were, but the 2023 All-Ireland champions looked shaky at the back, conceding three goals in the game.

However, it was Paul Mannion who proved to be the difference as he kicked four brilliant points in the second half to make sure that his team emerged victorious and with the likes of Shane Walsh still to return, Kilmacud are in a good position going forward.

4. David Clifford's rediscovers top form in Fossa win

David Clifford rediscovered his shooting boots as he scored 1-6 in Fossa's victory over Ballydonoghue.

The win means that Fossa advance to the quarter final stage of the Kerry Petroleum Intermediate Club Championship, but it was a hard fought victory that needed two late points from Paudie Clifford to get the over the line.

They looked leaky at the back, conceding three goals, but the 1-18 scored at the other end, showed that they are still very dangerous going forward, and after a disappointing county campaign, the Clifford brothers will be delighted to be back firing and winning at club level.

3. Four Masters Shock Gaoth Dobhair

Club championships

After years of playing in the lower divisions of Donegal football, Four Masters have proved that they won't be the whipping the boys in the county's top tier.

The Division Two winners not only beat club giants Gaoth Dobhair, they did it in a convincing manner, recording an eight point win that really announced their arrival on the big stage.

Goals from Seanan Carr, Alex McCalmont, and Killian Faulkner ensured that a famous victory for the club was recorded, and the Donegal championship just got very interesting.

2. 46-year-old Johnny Doyle still doing the business

Club championships

Johnny Doyle found the back of the net as Allenwood made a winning return to the senior Kildare championship following a seven-year absence.

Closer to the age of 50 than 40, the former Kildare star just never seems to slow down, and if Father Time waits for no man, he is at least slightly delayed by this legend.

An inspiration to all sports people who might think their best years are behind them, the day Doyle does hang up his boots will be a very sad one, so it's great that we can still enjoy him on Kildare's top stage while he's there.

1. Slaughtneil end Watty Graham's Glen unbeaten streak

Club championships

Slaughtneil have ended Watty Graham's Glen's unbeaten streak in the Derry championship that has stretched for almost three years.

A Shane McGuigan penalty proved to be the difference as Slaughtneil gave the All-Ireland champions their first taste of defeat in a long time.

Before 2021, Glen had never won a single Derry championship in their history, but between then and 2024, they had won the last three, picked up two Ulster titles and an All-Ireland as well.

As it was a group stage match, Malachy O'Rourke's men are still likely to get through the group, and build on their success from recent years.
