Clodagh McCambridge On Why Armagh Get Best Out Of Siblings At Inter-county Level

Successful siblings playing for the same inter-county team is not an uncommon thing in the GAA as brothers like David Clifford and Paudie Clifford, or Alan Brogan and Bernard Brogan, instantly spring to mind.

However, what is a little more uncommon, is having an inter-county team that is successful in both the men's and ladies game, with brothers and sisters representing both at the same time.

In Armagh though, this is not an unusual sight as this year's All-Ireland winners like Barry McCambridge, and the Mackin brothers, all have sisters who play at the top level for the Orchard county as well.

Speaking at the AIB media launch, where AIB have agreed to sponsor the ladies football championship as well as the mens, Armagh star Clodagh McCabridge, sister of Barry, and Meabh (who also plays for the ladies team) says that the strong family ties add to her own experience as an inter-county player.

"It is great because there is that interest when we would be coming into training and chatting about how the men are getting on, but it is a lot closer to home and it is good that way.

"Definitely in our club, and a lot of others in Armagh, there is a lot of focus on the one-club model, and that is maybe a benefit, because they are bringing everyone on.

"It isn't just the boys going out to train, it's the whole family, which is great, and we were seeing them (Armagh men_ get to the final, but we were kind of playing week on week, so we would have loved to have been there, but it is nice to have that family connection.

"People kind of understand how you feel as well, like those within the team and stuff."

AIB today announced a landmark sponsorship agreement with the Ladies Gaelic Football Association (LGFA), becoming the title sponsor of the coveted All-Ireland Club Championships. This historic partnership marks the first time a single sponsor has united.

McCambridge obviously credits her parents for supporting all of their children in their sporting careers equally, but also believes that a lot of the credit should also go to her club Clann Eireann.

"My club especially, talking from experience, there is a massive ladies section, which is great, and from no age you were brought in and there was a standard.

"It wasn't just playing for the sake of playing, you are trying to achieve something, you would have seen the teams go before you and that's what you were modelling yourself on, and that's something we are conscious of now as well, we are playing for the younger ones coming through."

Unfortunately Armagh fell at the semi-final stages this year, but have shown that they are getting stronger year by year, and after watching Kieran McGeeney's men prove so many people wrong last summer by lifting the Sam Maguire, it can only work as motivation for the ladies team next year.

"We lost our semi-final, and the men's final was a week after, and it was probably a welcome distraction because we could put our loss to the side and focus on the final.

"But I know from chatting to a few girls after that it was a missed opportunity for us, especially after seeing what the men went on to do, so it is a big motivator for us.

"It's something that we will probably talk about going into next year as well."
