Ciaran Kilkenny showed incredible athleticism to catch the late kick-out that led to Cormac Costello's levelling score against Mayo.

Mayo looked like they had done enough to win the game and top the group when Ryan O'Donoghue put them one up in injury time with less than a minute left to play, but there was time for one last sting in the tale.

Stephen Cluxton went long with the kick-out and Ciaran Kilkenny leapt highest to catch it incredibly. It tied what was a brilliant game of football at 0-17 apiece but crucially meant that Dublin top the group due to their superior score difference.

They now advance straight through to the All-Ireland quarter finals giving them a fortnight to prepare while Mayo will be back in action next weekend in the preliminaries.

Cormac Costello was named man-of-the-match after the game and deservedly so having given a tremendous display.

There were some great performances from both sides with Aidan O'Shea, Mattie Ruane and Tommy Conroy in particular standing out for Mayo, as the two old rivals produced an absolute classic once more.

Speaking after the game, The Sunday Game analyst Lee Keegan said he was proud of his county, though Ciaran Whelan feels the draw will be a psychological blow for them going forward.

"I feel for them," said Keegan.

"They were as brave and as honest as they've been against Dublin in a long time.

"It's as good a performance as they've given in a long time. Many teams nearly concede the game to Dublin, but Mayo put their best foot forward," added Keegan.

"They went at them, they threw the shackles off. I feel it's the only way to beat Dublin. I was worried about the third quarter, but Mayo kept going and going and going.

"How good was Ciaran Kilkenny's catch? And I thought he was huge in the second half too," he concluded.

Whelan added that Mayo will take positives from their display none-the-less.

"Dublin showed why they're the champions they are in that last play.

"Mayo did so much right throughout the whole day. It's a psychological blow now for Mayo to lift themselves for next week. But they did a lot right there, and they will take positives. The challenge is to re-group now. But they were solid defensively. They kicked some brilliant scores from tight angles."

Man-of-the-match Costello said games like these are 'what you want to play Gaelic football for."

"Dublin-Mayo games are always brilliant. That's what you want to play Gaelic football for. An extra week recovery is key, and we'll gladly take it. We're through and that's all that matters," he said.
