Cathal Barrett will not play again for Tipperary in 2017.
Barrett last played for the reigning All-Ireland champions in their Munster Championship loss to Cork in May. Despite suffering a injury in the loss, Barrett was dropped from the Tipperary panel for a disciplinary issue.
The 24-year-old returned to club action last week for Holycross-Ballycahill, but it was not enough for Tipperary manager Michael Ryan to reintroduce him to the squad.
Speaking to GAA.ie ahead of the county's All-Ireland semi-final against Galway, Ryan confirmed that there will be no more additions to the squad in 2017.
Just to nail that for everyone, there’s been a lot of speculation in the media over the last 24 to 48 hours.
What has been reported is accurate - our panel for 2017 is formed.
There will be no more changes to the panel in 2017. That’s it and that’s the last I will say on that.
While Tipperary's full-back line has struggled in Barrett's absence (especially against Clare), any hopes he had of playing a part in their quest to retain Liam McCarthy seem all but over.
With a player of Barrett's stature remaining on the sidelines, Ryan will hope his team perform against Galway, otherwise questions may be asked about the absence of the former Young Hurler of the Year.
