It was a result for the ages. Laois' win over a 1/10 Dublin yesterday in the All-Ireland Preliminary Quarter-Final might have been one of the biggest shocks in the history of the hurling championship. It capped off an incredible season for Laois, who will play Division 1 and Leinster Championship hurling next season, and will play Tipperary in the All-Ireland Quarter-Final proper next Sunday.
The scenes in O'Moore Park yesterday provided one of the great GAA moments, with players, management, and fans alike in tears of joy as unbridled emotion was displayed after such a famous win. In the crowd with them all, as he tends to be at these occasions, was the one and only Buff Egan, the king of weaker county coverage. He captured it all. as he does, and his day was done, or so he thought.
Instead, he ended up right in the middle of the Laois panel's celebrations.

According to the man himself, the team bus stopped having spotted him walking away from the ground after the famous occasion. On a high after the result, they pulled over and invited him on to join in the celebrations.
Those celebrations included a trip to a golf course, where the Eddie Brennan and the Laois team tried to get Buff swinging. Unfortunately, the bould Buff is a hurling man through and through, and never had the inclination to bother with such boring pastimes as golf. It took a few goes but he got there in the end.
Amazing!
We know with a Quarter-Final next Sunday, the Laois players will have to delay a true blow-out for at least another week, but it's good to see they were allowed to enjoy themselves yesterday. These are the occasions to remember after a historic season.
