Three seconds into the Dr. McKenna Cup final on January 23rd, Derry midfielder Brendan Rogers hit the ground after a dangerous collision with Tiernan McCann of Tyrone.
The Derry midfielder would require 14 stitches to repair his his lip, wounded as a result of the clash with McCann.
Numerous red cards were show during the game, one of them was not to McCann.
Speaking to BBC Sport Northern Ireland after Derry's opening game of the National Football League, manager Damian Barton described the incident as 'horrific'.
I think Brendan was quite shocked. Some people were quite horrified.
I'll leave it to other people to make up their minds.
Brendan has been very quiet about it and we have been very quiet about it as well.
It was quite an horrific incident. I wouldn't like to expand on it to be quite frank.
It was an incident that thankfully you don't see very often.
Barton told of how the incident affected the Derry camp, so much that he was unable to speak following the game.
I think it affected the mood of all of us.
It overshadowed for me what was a positive night for football.
I think the amount of respect that was shown between Derry and Tyrone was very evident but it's one of those things I'll let people make up their own minds about.
Rogers' injury means that along with missing Derry's win against Fermanagh, he could also miss this weekend's game against Cavan. According to Barton, Rogers time out of action could have been lengthier if he had not been wearing a gumshield.
He's very frustrated at missing the likes of today's contest. He could miss next weekend aswell. Of course we're running into the Sigerson and Queens will need him.
More importantly, he was very shocked; I spoke to him on Sunday morning.
If anyone wanted to know the value of wearing a gumshield. The impact that he took, but for the gumshield, I think we'd be looking at much more horrific injurues.
It's one of those things, it shouldn't have happened.
