Mickey Harte's time as Derry manager was a bit like a firework in that it exploded immediately, grabbed everyone's attention, and then disappeared just as quickly.

In a turbulent few months Harte guided Derry to McKenna Cup and Division One success, before embarking on a disastrous championship campaign that saw them lose four games in total.

Whether things were going good or going bad, there was loads of noise around the team, mostly from the outside, with people like Joe Brolly vehemently against the idea of a Tyrone legend like Harte taking charge of his beloved Derry.

Rumours spread quickly, there was talk of fall-outs in training camps, and revolts against the boss from Errigal Ciaran, but at last, someone who was actually involved with the Derry team has spoken about it.

Talking on The Puke Football Podcast, in collaboration with the Sure What Do We Know? show, Rogers' was asked what it was actually like working under Harte, what his coaching style was, and what sort of manager was he?

I suppose the dynamic that I was always aware of when he took the job, was that he was the manager, and Gavin Devlin was the coach, so he might have a style of play, but that was discussed with Gavin, and they would have that conversation together, based on the players they have got on their disposal.

"That's what people have to appreciate, you can have a style of play all you want, but you have to tweak it and make it work, so Gavin did all the coaching, and Mickey done the managerial side of things, in terms of talking to players and stuff", Rogers' revealed.

"In terms of tactics, it would have been a joint venture in terms of video analysis and things like that.

"I wasn't under any illusion that - like Mickey is not going to be out there in his late 60s trying to gee boys on, and kick balls out from behind the net, like that's not going to happen.

"He certainly speaks collectively and things like that brilliantly, but I wasn't expecting him to get the boots on like, so I was happy with the dynamic, I didn't really expect anything else."

When describing Harte, one attribute above everything else really stood out for the Slaughtneil player, and that was the Tyrone native's insatiable appetite to win.

"He is a winner, God he is a winner. It doesn't matter what age he is, with his voice, there is no mellowing with time, he wants to win.

"Doesn't matter if we're playing 45 or Jenga, he's winning, and that's it, it's just that mentality, and when he speaks about it - not in a bad way, but you know when someone has got that venom in their voice, I'm winning here at all cost, and driving you on, that's him.

"It's not a case of 'I'm saying this to get you going' that is just him. He can't lose that winner's edge, and if he did, he wouldn't be where he's at now anyway.

"It's that winners edge that makes him go 'I want to manage again.' Like that man is driving now from Errigal Ciaran to Offaly to manage, because he has that edge to play his part, and do his bit."

Now a part of the Offaly management team, Harte's journey in Gaelic football continues, but as for Derry, it has now been 11 weeks since they have had a manager, and the search doesn't look like it is any closer to being completed.
