After Derry won the league earlier this year, the team went to Portugal for a warm training camp, but when they landed back in Ireland, the rumour mill was in full flight.

There had been stories of fights, fall-outs, and just about everything else, so when the Oakleafers lost their opening game against Donegal in the Ulster championship, that only compounded things.

What followed next was a difficult time for the Derry team, losing to Galway, and then Armagh before finally picking up their first win the championship this season.

As struggles continued on the pitch, rumours about what happened in Portugal only grew, but Derry midfielder Brendan Rogers has put these to bed once and for all.

Speaking on the Sure What Do We Know? podcast, the hosts asked the Slaughtneil clubman outright - "what happened in Portugal?"

"I mean, and take this as the final.... literally nothing," Rogers declared.

"When I say 'literally nothing', it was literally nothing. I came home, and there was all of these stories about boys fighting and stuff.

"See if there was even like - somebody did a late tackle in training and they had each other by the throat or something, and you had to split it up, like that happens in every team sport, and if it had of been something like that you could jut say 'aw it was a pushing match.'

"But literally nothing, it could not have went any better. Everybody gets on, the whole team gets on, it's not like the days of old where the Slaughtneil boys and Glen boys don't sit next to each other, and it's rivalry, where you're throwing peas at each other - it's not like that.

"It is so mixed, but it (the Portugal rumours) never stopped. Then people kept saying it again and again, and if you don't have a good day then it was 'that's because them boys are fighting at training.'

"My family was laughing, going 'you'll never guess what happened this week', even as recently as two days ago I am still hearing rumours about Portugal.

"It is always the same three or four people getting circled, and at what point does somebody go: 'it's bullshit.'"

Maybe now the endless voice notes on WhatsApp that have been 'forwarded many times' might stop or at least slow down in frequency.
