Kevin Walsh's decision to drop Barry McHugh into the starting line-up shortly before throw-in proved a wise one in Galway's division one clash with Mayo in Salthill.
In the 18th minute, McHugh fired a brilliant strike beyond the reach of David Clarke in the Mayo goal. After a ball was played into space in front of McHugh, he got the better of Mayo fullback Ger Cafferky who slid of the Pearse Stadium surface.
McHugh's goal put Galway ahead 1-3 to 0-02.
