Armagh are in the All-Ireland final for the first time since 2003, and are hoping to bring the Sam Maguire back home for only the second time in their history.

It was 2002 when now manager Kieran McGeeney captained the Orchards to the promise land, and just as it was then, All-Ireland fever swept the whole county, sending fans into a state of delirium as they prepared to watch their team line out on the biggest day in the footballing calendar.

Up until now the only thing that 2002 had, that this current crop of players didn't have, was an anthem to sing as they marched to Croke Park.

Folk singer and Armagh native Damien Quinn released a country tune over 20 years ago that included all of the star players names, and was played in bars all across the county.

Now, two decades later, Quinn has revamped the song and released the rebooted version for the new generation of orange and white fans to rally behind.

"When they won the semi-final, I was inundated with messages to get the 2002 song updated,” Quinn told Belfast Live.

“It was such a catchy tune, people wanted it updated, especially for younger ones who weren’t even born in 2002.

“I though I’d update it so the fans can relate to the players. It worked well - within two hours of me posting it to Facebook, it had 52,000 views."

Unlike the first time that the song was released, it went out as a cassette that was sold in shops and could only be heard if you purchased it or happened to hear it on the radio.

In 2024, with the likes of YouTube, Spotify and all of the other streaming platforms, the song was uploaded and heard by thousands instantaneously.

“I was in Santa Ponsa last week and I didn’t get home until the early hours of Monday morning - I worked on the verses on Monday trying to get it right,” added Quinn.

"I recorded it on Tuesday and got it out on Wednesday. It was stressful as you need to get it out as soon as possible. Everybody still remembers the 2002 tune, but it is great to update it.

“You can upload songs to Youtube, Facebook and Instagram straight away. It will be a few days before it up uploaded on Spotify and Apple Music.”

Considering the new version of Jimmy's Winning Matches was released a few weeks ago as Donegal made it to the semi-final stages, there is stiff competition for the number one spot in Gaelic football's 'Top of the Charts'.

However, if Kieran McGeeney ends up being the manager holding the Sam Maguire trophy next Sunday, then there will only be one song played in bars and streets over Ireland this summer.
