The GAA have gone social media mad in the past few months, their latest effort attempts to profit from the wealth of trick shot 'virals' in every corner of the interweb. There is some sense here, if ultimate frisbee can use the youtubes to gain popularity, why can't hurling.
The new campaign is described as Freestyle Hurling, a joint GAA/GPA initiative, aimed at helping to promote the game of hurling across the world using modern media.
There is one main ingredient in a successful trick shot video, the trick shot, and with this following video, audience new to the game will be left asking about the current state of the Irish economy as all the action takes place in what appears to be a badly managed ghost estate. The closest the lads and lady get to a trick shot is nailing a sliotar close to a target on a shed in the corner of the estate.
The GAA are asking people of all ages to create their own video showcasing what hurling can bring to the world and perhaps we will see more sliotars landing in wheely bins and maybe even an entry from Jason Statham.
