Aidan O'Shea was shown a black card in the 30th minute of Mayo's All-Ireland football quarter-final defeat to Kerry on Sunday.
Initially it appeared as though O'Shea had been sin-binned for dragging down a Kerry player. According to RTÉ, that was not the case.
"We're led to understand that it was for the 5.14 rule which says it's for 'words, deeds and actions to an opponent'," said Joanne Cantwell at half-time.
Former Mayo footballer Colm Boyle said that if O'Shea was black carded for abusive language, then it was "slightly harsh".
"It's a very interesting one," said Boyle.
"It came at a really bad Mayo. They were after conceding a goal, and were trying to stay in the game. Now they're down to 14 men.
"I missed the incident, and I'm just going on the replay. We thought initially it might have been for a drag down, but we thought there were two people involved, and Clifford might have been as guilty as Aidan O'Shea.
"If you're giving black cards for abusive language to an opponent, then you're going to be giving out a lot of black cards in a game. It's slightly harsh, if that is the reason for it."
