Since Jim Gavin and his FRC committee first tabled their proposals to give the Gaelic Football rule book its single biggest shake-up in the history of the sport, the opinions of players, fans and pundits has been split.

Those new rules were publicly put to the test for the first time across four 'Railway Cup' style fixtures in Croke Park last weekend, while generally speaking the feedback was positive, the new rules weren't without issue.

On one hand, the newly proposed 1v1 throw-ins, solo-and-go, and 3 up/back were among the rules that went down a treat. However, extensive feedback from the managers and players exposed issues with the scoring system used and highlighted areas where other improvements could be made.

Aidan O'Shea's predictions proved right as FRC adjust proposals

Speaking after Connacht's hammering of Leinster in the first trial game on Friday evening, when the high-scoring resulted in the game running away from Leinster very quickly, O'Shea reflected that the four-point goals and two-point 45s may need to be adjusted.

That seemed to be very one-sided and the game ran away from Leinster very quickly. Yeah the tap-and-go and the three-up I think work but the scoring system - I don't think there is any real need to (change that).

We have got to try and embrace it as best we can over the next few days but there is probably a few tweaks that need to be made.

While it looks like many of Jim Gavin's Gaelic football rules will be here to stay in at least the immediate future, Aidan O'Shea's comments were proved right as the Irish Examiner's Maurice Brosnan revealed that the committee will be making a number of changes before the rules are put in front of a committee.

Namely, those changes will see the value of a goal return from four points to the original three points and 45s revert to being worth a single point.

Additionally, the games have given rise to a number of new proposals which will now be considered, including a 30-second limit on free-takers, the enforcement of four steps, the establishment of a Game Intelligence Unit and an inter-change substitution format.

The finalised proposals will now go to a meeting of a special congress at GAA HQ at the end of November.
