Aidan Forker is known for being a very cerebral footballer, someone who is diligent with his preparation, and fascinated with the whole 'High Performance' space.

Now captain of Armagh, Forker will lead his county out on All-Ireland final day this Sunday, but there will be no one less caught up in the emotion and pageantry that comes with such a role.

A keen reader, the Maghery clubman often dips into his library for sources of inspiration or just to simply satisfy his curiosity around the psychology of elite athletes.

One book that he has dusted off from the book shelf, is the autobiography of Ronan O'Gara, and as he was flicking through it before the orchard county's game against Kerry in the All-Ireland semi-final, one line in particular stood out to him.

"I'm actually re-reading Rog’s book, O’Gara there. I'm about 40, 50 pages in. Something I read before the match there on Saturday was quite good.

"He talked about the Munster teams building up to win stuff and that there was a lot of knocks, a lot of bangs, a lot of defeat before… a lot of people were calling them nearly men and journeymen and these types of things and he said, 'the reality is, until we went and won that first Heineken Cup they were right'.

"That's stuck with me a wee bit, to be honest. It only sticks with you in the moment and then you're on the bus, your phones, and you don't think about it again."

Despite having an interest in reading up on other sports heroes, he doesn't necessarily believe that it has much of an impact on his performance, and that it's more just the enjoyment of it.

"I think all those wee things add to it all. I like that, I enjoy it. Do I take that and add it to my performance or game? Probably not.

"I just enjoy reading about it, I suppose."

Forker will be hoping to write his own piece of sporting history on Sunday by beating Galway and bringing the Sam Maguire back to Armagh, but whether it's mentally or physically, there is no question that he will be as prepared as he possibly can be.
