A tweet this morning from the excellent WaterfordHurling outlined the extraordinary scoring record of one John Mullane. Only Eddie Keher has more championship points from play that the Deise tyro. Even Henry Shefflin trails him in this particular record.
I always found the biggest sign of respect or even fear was when us of the rebel persuasion would single him out when the Waterford bus would crawl through Thurles. He stuck two fingers up to us during one of the many epic Waterford and Cork battles and the indignation when he did so was funny given the abuse that was levelled at him anytime he touched the ball.
Far, far worse players have won All-Irelands and it is a sporting tragedy that titans such as he seemed destined to never win one. That should not detract from his greatness as a player, and who knows, maybe the Gods will conspire to give him his due this year.
