A Shane Curran Penalty And An Absolutely Mental 1989 Connacht Minor Final

In the build-up to the All-Ireland club final last week, Marty Morrissey paid a visit to Shane Curran's swimming pool for the Six One. He also reminded the country of the great Curran penalty from the '89 Connacht minor final against Galway. This clip didn't make the Chris O'Dowd paean to Cake, and it's worth watching if you've never seen it. Peader Glennon stands over the ball, down one, contemplating a last-minute penalty, while out of nowhere, a shirt-sleeved Curran sprints up to the ball and buries the penalty. Marty's clip doesn't do justice to the mental conclusion of the match. Roscommon were awarded the trophy and performed a lap of honour, only for the Connacht Council to award the match to Galway because of the dodgy penalty. From the The ref has to be escorted from the pitch. Pure training ground genius, and something I'm sure they're still talking about down in Ros country.

One GAAboard poster remembered the day like this:

It was Peadar Glennon who was taking the penno & was just as he commenced his run up ... Cake arrived like an express train to smash the ball low into the net. Cue major Ros celebrations, both on and off-field! :D

We couldn't believe it afterwards, when we heard on the car radio on the way home, that the game had actually been awarded to Galway. Sure the Rossies even did a lap of honour of McHale Park after being presented with the cup with nary a dissenting word about it at the time.

It seemed to us that the ref had allowed the win to stand initially, but changed his mind afterwards. Why else would The Ros have been presented with the cup & allowed to do a lap of honour ???
