It looks like Anthony Cunningham is determined to retain his role as manager of the Galway hurling team. The ink was barely dry on the new contract ratifying Cunningham as the Galway hurling manager for a fifth successive season, when rumours of player unrest began to seep out last week.
A delegation of player representatives had supposedly met with Cunningham last Sunday to convey to him a majority feeling of 'no confidence' in the St Thomas clubman. Hours later however, Cunningham's reappointment was confirmed at a county board meeting.
The news was not well received by the players and it was looking like Cunningham was destined to depart the role in a similar fashion to the resignation of the Mayo co-managers Noel Connelly and Pat Holmes. But now it appears that Cunningham is adamant that he won't back down.
This development follows the discussions held at an emergency meeting on Sunday night where the Galway boss expressed his wishes to remain in the role despite the in-camp conflict. This is the second time the squad have had issues with Cunningham this season, having already sought his removal just before the championship started.
Cunningham, who won two All-Irelands as a player, has steered Galway to two All-Ireland finals since his introduction in 2012 as well as a first Leinster title in his first year at the helm.
