Clare started off their campaign with a loss at home to Limerick before a dramatic 3-26 to 3-24 win away to Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh. This was followed up with another nail-biting victory, as they defeated a Waterford side managed by their former boss Davy Fitzgerald 4-21 to 2-26 in Cusack Park.
Brian Lohan's men booked their place in the final with a win over Tipperary at Semple Stadium in the final round. Diarmuid Ryan's goal in the 42nd minute was the difference maker as Clare would win the match with a final score of 1-24 to 0-24.

In Limerick's case, they will be hoping to capture their sixth Munster title in a row. The Treaty County got their championship underway with a win over Clare in Ennis. In round two, Limerick cruised to a win over Tipperary at the Gaelic Grounds, winning 2-27 to 0-18. John Kiely's side then fell to defeat away to Cork, with a late Patrick Horgan penalty giving them a 3-28 to 3-26 win.
Waterford would stand in Limerick's way for a place in the Munster final coming into the final round. Limerick would ultimately breeze past the Déise 0-30 to 2-14 in front of a home crowd at the Gaelic Grounds to book top spot in the group and book their place in the final.

In their round-robin match, Limerick came back from a nine point deficit with a quarter of the game left to beat Clare 3-15 to 1-18. Goals from Diarmuid Byrnes, Donnacha Ó Dalaigh, and Aaron Gillane within seven minutes of each other helped John Kiely's side open the championship with a win.
The winners of this game will move onto the All-Ireland semi-finals, while the runners-up will face either the runners-up of the Joe McDonagh Cup or Wexford in the All-Ireland quarter-final.
