Ballyhaunis were crowned Mayo hurling champions on Sunday after a 2-13 to 1-13 win against Tooreen.
It was a comeback win for Ballyhaunis. Midway through the second half, they trailed by three points.
That deficit arrived following 90 seconds of real drama which saw Tooreen miss two penalties before grabbing a goal through David Harrison.
Some insightful sideline commentary wondered why the first penalty taker did not 'run up and drive it'. A poorly hit strike, straight at the goalkeeper, was easily saved. However, a Tooreen player looking to pick up the rebound was pushed and the referee awarded another penalty.
The second effort was better struck but it hit the crossbar. It looked like Ballyhaunis had miraculously escaped only for them to lose possession and allow Harrison to force the waving of the green flag for Tooreen.
Mayo dual star Keith Higgins, playing for Ballyhaunis, was named Man of the Match after scoring 1-9.
