Just weeks after Kieran O'Leary and Fionn Fitzgerald had lifted Sam Maguire for Kerry, the Kingdom received a major boost for 2015.
News came that Tommy Walsh, an All-Ireland winner in 2009, would be returning to Eamonn Fitzmaurice's already stacked deck of cards after five years in AFL.
Fitzmaurice now faces an enviable problem. Where to deploy the 6' 5" Tralee man?
He already has numerous options in the full forward line, including James O'Donoghue, Kieran Donaghy, Paul Geaney, Barry John Keane and Stephen O'Brien to name a few. This excess might mean Walsh being used somewhat unexpectedly.
Speaking to the Irish Independent, the Kerry manager said that the former AFL player could be used at full back, a position where the county have had problems over the years.
Definitely Tommy will give us something different. He can play in any number of positions. Like his father, you could try and make a full-back of him for a particular type of forward, say if Michael Cussen was playing full-forward for Cork. You could definitely play him centre-back. And you could play him anywhere from eight up.
Tommy's father is seven-time All-Ireland winner Sean Walsh.
