Twenty-six players from across Europe are taking part in the annual 'Easter Series' training camp, staged by AFL Europe, in London this month. The players attending make up the 'European Legion' team, coached by Tadhg Kennelly.
An intriguing event, which takes place in the posh surrounds of David Ellery's stomping ground, Harrow 'public' school, the training camp gathers together players from all over Europe.
According to Kennelly, the event gives the European Legion players a chance to refine and accelerate their Australian Rules skills and gives AFL team recruiters a chance to watch them in action.
Of the 26 players taking part, 11 come from Ireland, 6 are from Denmark, 4 are English, 3 are Croatian, and there is 1 apiece from both Germany and Sweden.
Four Kildare players are making the trek, Daniel Flynn, Luke Flynn, Paddy Brophy and Sean Hurley. The others are Stephen Coen and Shehroz Akram (both Mayo), Ciaron O'Hanlon (Armagh), Pádraig Lucey (Kerry), Colin O'Riordan (Tipperary), Peter Cooke (Galway) and Conor McKenna (Tyrone).
The other players are all selected from the smattering of AFL teams around Europe. The four British players, for instance (Sean Walton, Cameron Cope, Sam Willatt, Ollie Dilieto) all play for the Great Britain AFL side. The German player, Jacob Jung, plays for the oddly named Stuttgart Emus AFL team.
Paddy Brophy, Sean Hurley, Daniel & Luke Flynn will train & line out as 'European Legion' v an elite Australian selection on Saturday next.
