Much is made of the dedication that people have to their GAA club. But serious credit to Boyle GAA supporter 105-year-old Michael Coyne, who was spotted attending the Roscommon County Final last weekend.
The dedicated fan, who is one of the oldest people in Ireland, was pictured by photographer Brian Farrell, enjoying a drink of whiskey in clubhouse ahead of the final against Strokestown.
Michael was along with his nephew Neil McGarry who volunteers for the club. When Brian asked how Neil's uncle was doing, his nephew replied,
No bother, he's here for the game having a small one in the clubhouse!
When asked by Brian at halftime, who would win, Michael replied that it would go down to the wire.
Strokestown win thrilling final
Michael would prove to be correct as the final was won with the last kick. Unfortunately, it was for Strokestown with substitute Tony Lavin kicking the winner in the fifth minute of injury time. It was Strokestown first title win in 20 years. However, it was heartbreak for Boyle appearing in their first senior final in 95 years, when Michael was 10. However, with stars such as Donie Smith and their first final appearance in nearly a century, the club are in a good position to challenge for silverware.
Thanks to Brian Farrell for sharing the great photo of Michael Coyne. If you would like to see more of Brian's photography, you can click here to view more of his photos on his Facebook page.
