Weight cuts are a very contentious subject in combat sports right now as the usual process of fighters dropping massive amounts of weight through dehydration in order to make it down to the classifications of a specific weight class, only to return to a normal weight for the fight, is having an effect on fighters' health.
The UFC have banned the previously common practice of using an IV to re-hydrate in an attempt to stop the extreme weight cutting taking place the week before a fight, but Diego Sanchez has today shown that he has returned to his usual weight after dropping to 145lbs in order to fight at featherweight.
Sanchez posted a picture on Instagram of him weighing 171.2 lbs.. Meaning he put on a staggering 26 pounds in one day.
That is absolute madness, but it's very common in MMA.
Conor McGregor is someone whose size is an advantage in his division, but it comes with a price as he also has to face a fierce weight cut to compete, resulting in him often looking worryingly gaunt during his weigh-ins.
While these athletes are professionals, it's still crazy to think what that extreme weight fluctuation is doing to their bodies.
