There was a time, not that long ago really, when the majority Irish backs were not as fleet of foot as the current crop.
The 'strike runner' was a mythic creature in Irish rugby in the 90s and early 00s - especially in Munster. That's a term you do not hear thrown around much these days. Chiefly because we now have healthy reserves of speedy wingers.
In an interview with Sunday Telegraph, Simon Zebo was asked who would win a 100m race between the Irish squad at the World Cup.
For the 25-year-old it comes down to either his Munster teammate Keith Earls or Tommy Bowe.
I don’t know. It’s very hard. Keith Earls? He’d be very quick over 40 metres.
Over 100m? Tommy Bowe, maybe? Jared Payne is deceptively quick, he gets some high metres per second. Other than that, I’d say either Earlsy or Tommy.
Of course, Zebo himself is no slouch, clocking 11.1 seconds for the 100m in his prime sprinting days.
