In the late 90s, a 16-year-old Xabi Alonso arrived in Kells to hone his English. He would also try his hand at Gaelic football during his sojourn in the Meath town.
Years later, he would remark on his stay.
I played Gaelic Football with some of the local boys. It was very fast, very tough. Maybe they should wear crash helmets.
When I was 16, I went to Ireland for a month to learn to speak English. I didn't know back then that it would turn out to be so useful! But I had a nice summer.
The Spanish international picked up more than a few words of English during his month in Ireland. He also learned how to drop kick a football.
Bayern Munich tweeted out this piece of nonchalant brilliance from Alonso. Just remember that's his weaker foot.
All down to his GAA background, of course.
