Have Manchester United actually gotten worse since the departure of Jose Mourinho? With each passing game, it is becoming more and more apparent that the Portuguese manager was not the main cause of their problems.
After the inevitable bounce that comes with the appointment of a new manager, things have quickly nosedived under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. A top four finish looks like a pipe dream at the minute, and they look like they could be the club to fall out of the established top six.
Jose Mourinho certainly feels that the team have only gotten worse since his departure. Speaking on Sky Sports this evening, he said that United are in a worse position now than when he was sacked at the end of 2018.
It is difficult for me to answer. I have been there for two seasons where I could feel lots of positive things, and I could feel a direction to go to.
Then obviously the third season was not good enough. I was sacked, probably deservedly sacked because I have the final responsibility as a manager.
But the sad reality is that they are worse than before.
For me it is a sad thing. Maybe people think I am enjoying the situation, I'm not enjoying it at all. I have people in the club that I love, I have lots of respect for the fans.
For me it is really sad because when a team boring, you are boring but you still get the results. In this moment, I don't feel anything.
I think they are going to really, really in trouble to get not just into the top four, but potentially the top six. This is with a sad voice and a sad feeling that I say that.
I think this team is worse than the one from last season.
The sentiment was shared by Graeme Souness, who said this was the worst United team of the Premier League era.
Damning.
