In light of a spectacular football ground in Iceland that came to our attention over the weekend, we have searched the globe for similarly impressive locations and backdrops from the world of sport, starting with that pitch in Iceland...

1. Hásteinsvöllur, Vestmannaeyjar, Iceland

This 100 year-old ground is currently home to Íþróttabandalag Vestmannaeyja, or IVB, who play in the Icelandic Championship

2. Zuoz Cricket Ground, Zuoz, Switzerland

Cricket may not be the most popular sport in Switzerland but the alps make for a spectacular setting

3. Estadio Municipal de Braga, Braga, Portugal

Braga's home stadium was built for Euro 2004, and became one of the most unique locations to host a European Championship game, as it is built into a quarry.

4. USS Midway, San Diego, California, USA

The famous USS Midway, now permanently residing in San Diego as a tourist attraction, hosted a college basketball game on Veteran's Day in 2011, a game attended by Barrack Obama.

The Dalmatian Coast serves as an impressive backdrop for HNK Rijeka of the Croatian top flight.

To compliment the surrounding area, the architects of Chivas Guadalajara's stadium in Mexico built the ground to look like a volcano.

9. Stadio Hernando Siles, La Paz, Bolivia

La Paz is not only the highest capital city in the world, making it difficult to play football in the first place, but at least the city's skyscrapers serve as stunning surroundings for a game.

The floating stadium in Singapore has been in place since 2007 and hosts many major events including sports and concerts.
