After Adam Idah scored two in the opening half of Norwich's game against Preston, we thought we had our fill of young Irish goal scorers today. We were wrong.
Ireland U19 international Will Smallbone was making his senior debut for Southampton this afternoon, starting on the right of midfield. With the home side would have been favourites for their clash against Huddersfield, this was a chance for the youngster to impress.
He certainly did so at the start of the second half, scoring his side's opening goal. A mention has to go to Shane Long for the beautiful cushioned header here.
Smallbone was afforded plenty of time here, but he took the goal extremely well for a player making his debut.
The midfielder came through the Southampton academy, joining the club at the age of eight. He turns 19-years old next month, and has been involved in the matchday squad in the Premier League on a couple of occasions so far this season.
Hopefully he can kick on and become a regular contributor after this goal.
