In honour of Tony Cascarino turning 52 today, we recall one of his finest moments in a green shirt. The game was a vital one. A Euro 92 qualifier against Graham Taylor's England team. This being the era before we were blessed with floodlights in Lansdowne Road, the game was frustratingly fixed for a Wednesday afternoon so most of English and Irish people of school-going age did not see the goal live.
However, nothing can take away from the delerious scenes that greeted this magnificent header. David Platt (who seemed to score the whole time for England in those years) put England in front before Cas hoisted a brilliant header over the head of Chris Woods. I particularly liked the way Cascarino hugged one of the supporters as if this lad had every right to be on the pitch. God be with the days when pitch invasions weren't restricted to the GAA.
Of course, here's another candidate for wildest reaction ever to a goal at Lansdowne Road.
And of course, for the more subversive minded of you, here's a different kind of wildness which greeted a David Kelly goal...
