According to PSV director Marcel Brands, Memphis Depay very nearly didn't sign for Man United. Although that's not to say he nearly joined Liverpool either. As has been widely suggested, the Dutchman may well have met with Brendan Rodgers but it seems increasingly unlikely that Liverpool were ever really in the race to sign Depay.
Instead it was Paris St Germain, who up until two days ago, looked like they would sign the 21 year old. However, Man United and Louis Van Gaal swooped and tied up a €30 million deal. After the news broke yesterday afternoon, Depay spoke to the media and confirmed that once United entered the race, there was only going to be one destination.
It was an exciting and pretty hectic period, and to have a choice between so many top clubs doesn't make it any easier. For me, Manchester United is an absolute dream club, so I didn't need any convincing of the guys who already play at Manchester United.
Addressing the other clubs who were interested, namely Liverpool and PSG, Depay confirmed that he had a number of other offers but thought with his heart rather than his wallet.
Yes, but you shouldn't believe all the rumours in the media. In the end it was just a matter of feeling, not a matter of money.
It's hard to know what to think of that. If Depay did in fact choose love over money, you'd have to question whether Liverpool were ever really in with a shout. It's hard to imagine that they would blow Man United's bid out of the water, let alone the mega-bucks thrown around by PSG. Perhaps the upset Liverpool fans were right, could it just have been Brendan Rodgers and co making it look like they were in for a big signing for show more than anything else?
