Where Were You When This Happened A Year Ago?

A year ago today, Ireland were utterly outclassed by Spain on a damp night in Gdansk in a game they could well have lost 10-0. I was in the city that night, although without a ticket, I had to watch the match in the UEFA FanZone. Filled with optimism and the hope that Glenn Whelan would put in an early Roy-Keane-on-Marc-Overmars type reducer on either Xavi or Iniesta, inspiring us to a victory that would be remembered throughout the ages in both song and legend, I was soon disappointed by Fernando Torres.

After the pain of hope had passed though and it became apparent this was about to be a turkey shoot, the atmosphere changed. And the Irish began to party. In fact, one Portuguese fan who lived in Madrid told me the Irish partied harder that night in Gdansk than the Spanish had when they won the whole World Cup.
