As is the case with much of European football, it's the final weekend of league action in Germany.
Going into Saturday afternoon, Werder Bremen were 16th in the Bundesliga, a position which would mean a relegation playoff with third-placed Bundesliga 2 side Nurnberg. They were just two points ahead of Stuttgart in 17th, an automatic relegation spot.
To add spice to the relegation mix, Bremen were up against Eintracht Frankfurt, the team placed just a point above them in the league.
A win for Werder would mean definite safety, a fact of which the city's population was not ignorant.
As the Werder Bremen bus arrived at the Weserstadion, fans thronged the environs of the stadium.
