Ray Wilkins has been named as the new head coach of the Jordanian national football team. One hopes it will keep him away from any Sky Sports work for the forseeable.
He was sacked as Fulham’s assistant manager in February, and was appointed the Jordan job on the recommendation of Prince Ali bin Al-Hussein who has been head of the Jordanian FA since the age of 25.
Just as bizarrely, former Ireland centre forward Frank Stapleton has been names as his assistant despite having been out of top-level coaching since a stint as a ‘specialist coach’ in Sam Allardyce’s backroom staff at Bolton Wanderers in 2003/4. He had previously been in charge of New England Revolution in the US in 1996.
We have to assume that the pair have remained friendly since their time as Manchester United teammates in the early 1980s, but this is surely one the most unexpected international managerial duos in a good while.
