A missed Wayne Rooney penalty saw DC United bow out in a shootout against Columbus Crew in the MLS playoffs.
Zack Steffen saved the Englishman's penalty, the first of the shoot-out after the match finished 2-2. Luciano Acosta and Nick DeLeon also missed penalties to ensure the shoot-out finished 3-2.
Federico Higuain, brother of Gonzalo, scored twice in normal time for Crew who now march on to play Chris Armas's New York Red Bulls. The semi-final match-ups now look like this: Columbus Crew versus New York Red Bulls, Portland Timbers versus Seattle Sounders, Real Salt Lake versus Sporting Kansas, New York City versus Atlanta United.
Speaking to Goal after the game, Rooney focused on the phenomenal form that saw DC United make a late run into the playoffs rather than the result itself.
Really we had no right to make the playoffs. To do that we have brought belief back to the fans. We have brought belief back to the team. We have to build on that now.
