Azerbaijan manager Bertie Vogts has revealed that he once asked Wayne Rooney to play for Scotland, of whom he was manager between 2002 and 2004.

While Vogts reveals that Rooney hastily turned down the, er, opportunity in favour of playing for England, it does raise the question as to whether Mick McCarthy or Brian Kerr ever approached Rooney during his breakthrough years at Everton, with the forward also being eligible to play for Ireland.
