Wayne Rooney did not scale the heights of his Sunday night heroics against Orlando City when his DC United faced Portland Timbers on Wednesday but the 32-year-old did score a brace.
Half-time looming and DC a goal down to Portland, Rooney levelled the game with a calm finish after being played through on goal by Yamil Asad.
A Oneil Fischer goal two minutes after the break gave DC the lead.
Rooney doubled it with a superb free kicking in the 68th minute. It was his third goal of the season in his seventh appearance for the club.
Darren Mattocks made it 4-1 shortly before the final whistle.
